A truly charming gentleman is Mr. Edmund Russell, apostle and expotmder of the Delsartean faith. We take back all the uncivil and cruel things we have uttered against old Delsarte and his creed, for we have seen Mr. Russell eat pumpkin pie at Rector's restaurant late of nights. In the whole wide range of philosophy there is none other that appeals more directly or more potently to our sympathies than does that philosophy which justifies by practdce the eating o ; pumpkin pie. Mr. Whittier, the Amesbury poet, ia as famous a punisher of pie as Ralph Waldo Emerson was, and that is saying much, for Emerson was mighty in the pursuit, comprehension, mastication, digestiĆ³n and assimilation of that cheering viand. Apple pie, however, and not pumpkin, was Einerson's favorite diet,
