Saturduy noon, While J. B. Bach a.nd Iliis clerk were at diuner, his office was eatered, a drawer forced open and $55 in money taken. He first liseovered tliat the drawer had been forced open wit'h a wide ehisel, and then learned fchat sucli a tooi had been stolen froni ttae Cook House. William ("Peewee") Johinson liad been loattng around the hotel iintil about Dhe time Bacli's oifice was broken into and suspicion at once rested on him as tdie guilty -party. By Sunday aiternoon the otficer became so sure of it that he arrested Johnson and placed him in jail. A seaveüi revealed $22.67 and as he seldom worked, this tidfled its weig'ht with the oííicers. Johnson denied the theft, and cliiiined that a married lady had given him the money, a ïact that she also claimed, but had half a dü'zen different verslons of her story. ïiy Monday nig-ht Johnson weakened and aiknowledged the theit, but agreed to return the money to Mr. Bach, which he did on ïuesday. Johnson is very low -wlth consumption and the chances are that he has but o. short tinxeto live, so he was released from jail after refunding the' money. This is not the first shady traneactioo that Johnson has been cownected with, having been arrested for obtaindng money from .ludge Cooley and others, a matter whieh wms afterwarda settled up. Burglars enterfed Bacb'a insurance office again Tuesday night but the proprietor háHlearned a leflBOB trom his experience of last Satvirday and the burglars were not 1-ewarded for tlieir trouble.
