The Wooden Indian
I used to live in Spain, and afterward in the West Indies, before I carne to the States. I met the wooden Indian long before I camo to this country. 1 have been asked before where the wooden Indian got hi? start. I only know what I have heard about hiin in the Old "World. There was aa adventurer named Rutz who left his old city, Barcelona, and carne to Virginia 300 years ago. When he returned he executed the wooden Lidian in a rude way, as a type of the aort of animal he had met in the New Woild, and the figure was set np in front of a shop whera wine was sold. Finally it became a sort of trademark. There were smokers in those days and they assembled around the Indian. And the wooden Indian is now seen in front of nearly every cigar store.
