The consequence was that botih Mrs. Treby and her charge feJl headlomg the whole length otf Mie stairs. A natural impulse and a tioteworfhy presence of niind liowever, 'prompted lier to protect 1li' Chi'ld as best elie could, but when the bottom was reaehed and all was over. her fears becarae exaggerated and uier screnms cattracted a large crowd. Botli Mrs. Treby and Tilie child were carriel up into Dr. Darllng's office, the ciiild crying lustily under the exeiteiucnt with whieh it was yiirroundod.
