The íirst democratie state convention held in Michigan was held in Ann Arbor, Augnst 20, 1835. Ex-Gov. Alpheus Felch, of this city, was a delégate to the convention froru Mouroe county, and was theSrd vice-presideat of the convention. E. 1'. Gardiner, the editor of the Afgus, was one of the delegates froun this county and a membei of the committee on eredentials. The convention nomhiated Stevens T. Mason as the first governor for Michigan, and Edward Mundy, of Ann Arbor, for lieutenant governor. There were about 1U0 delegates present. Five membersof the state central committee were taken irom Washtenaw, showing that Ann Arbor was to be the state headquarters for the campaign which triumphantly elected Mason for governor. Campaigniug in those days was notaltogether without exeitement, as au item in üctober, 1835, informa u& that Clark'stavern in Ypsilanti, wliere Mason was stopping, was stoned by a mob and the windows of the acting governor'a chainber were broken. In the year 1835, Alpheus Felch was elected a representative in the legislature from Monroe county. The representatives l'roin this county were H. E. Morse, John lirewer, ltufus Mattliews, Owen Ilowe, George Ilowe. James WIlill. and Alanson Crossman. Uut Michigan was not at once admitted into the Union, as the people supposed it would be. A convention lield in this city in September refused to accept a condition relating to the boundaries of the state imposed by congress as a condition of adnütting the territory as a state. The Ar:is still continued to cali the territorj :i state and on Sept. 28, 1886, a "statfe " convention was held in Ann Alborto nominale presidential electors. The delegates from Washtenaw were Wnï. R. Thompson, Gilbert Shattuck, William Moore. Solomon Sutlierland, Rufus Matthews, Natheniel Noble and E. P. Gardiner. The editor of the Argus was secretary of the convention. On every ballot A. Felch received flve votes for presidential elector. For some years it was comraon to hohl state conventions In ttai city.
