Before the verdict of the jury was made known the Providence lawyer made his preparations to escape. He left the court room at il o'clock Saturday night after liateniug to the greater portion of District Attorriey Stevens' closing argument. He wnt directly to the Valejo, the private hotel where he was stopping, and hurriedly packed his belongings. He called Manager Evans, of the hotel, to his apartinent and told him that he desired to settle his bilis. Graves' Incrirninating Itomarks. One hour after his secret departure the Itartling verdict, condemning Dr. Graves to death, was found. Before the lawyer's departure he was accused of being an accomplice of Dr. Graves. Itis supposed that this, coupled with a pretnonition of what the verdict would be, frightened him. On his way to jail after his fate had been pronounced the jiiry Dr. Graves made damaging sta .nients about Colonel Ballou. 'If Ballou had not come out here, I would liever have been convicted," he said. "I wanted to testify that I sent a bottle of pure whisky to Mrs. Barnaby. Ballou would not let me. He is as guilty as I am. I followed his instructions, and it is not right that he should go f ree and I to the gallows. Mili Hunt the Fleeing Lawjer. Mrs. Graves received many dispatches of condoionce yesterday, but none was from Colonel Ballon. It is believed that he will arrive in Chicago Monday morning, unless he stops on the way. It is not known what the destination of his ticket was. Speaking of Colonel Balloxi's flight John Conrad. prosecutiug witness for the state, aaid: "A Ithongh Colonel Ballou has fled it Is as easy to bring hini back as it was for him to disappear from Denver. I will follow him to the utterruost parts of the world." The grand jury will meet toniorrow rooming, after a long recess, when Colonel Ballou's flight will be considered. It is expected that he will be indicted in tli e next few days. TUe Doctor Thrcatens Suicide. Dr. Graves is in the condemned cell of tlie jai! here and a death-watch is placed over kim. Suicide is feared, as he frequently threatened yesterday to take his Ufe. He was a pitiable object yesterday aftemoon, Been sitting in dishabiile on the side of hls rmle iron cot. He had not even combcd hin hair. "Oh, my God, this is terrible," he exclnimed to the United Press correspondent. "I am an innocent man." Rreat tears rolled down his cheeks. Then he begged that his wifc be not interviewed. "Her troubles are already great enough," he said. There was a wild gleam in his eye that suggested desperatiou to the olserve. He refssed to talk about Col. Ballon at all.
