Early Monday morning, Daniel Burch, of Sharon, came to town with the information that his neighbor, John Schmidt, had committed suicide by hanging himself in his barn. Deputy Sheriff Kelly and S. H. Perkins, esq., were soon on their way to Sharon and the scène of the tragedy, where they found a crowd of neighbors assembled. A coroner s jury was soon empanneled, consisting of Messrs. W. B. Osborn, Wm. Campbell, Daniel Burch, Richard DuBois, John Jones and Andrew Kappler. The testiraony of Mrs. Schmidt and Daniel Burch was taken, which revealed the facts about as follows: Between six and seven o'clock on Monday morning, while yet in bed, Mr. Schmidt told Mrs. Schmidt and daughíer, a girl about 8 years of age, to go to the pasture and milk the cows. When they returned, Schmidt was not in the house and Mrs. S. began a seárch for hiña, which resulted in finding him hanging by a short rope from a rafter in the barn or shed and perfectly lifeless. She ran to the house and sent the children to the neighbors for help, then went and cut the body down. The verdict of the jury was that deceased came to his death by hanging himself. From the blackened appearance of the suicide's face it was evident thai he died from strangulation. Mr. Schmidt was sick on Sunday but visited one of the neighbors in the afternoon and told him that the neighbors were all down on him and that they intended to send him to state's prison. He was a very superstitious man and evidently not very strong minded.
