The senate cominittee on ftnance said in 1888, when it recommended its substitute for the Mills Uil, "lts framers have not hesitateci to erect or maintain defensive barriera which would carry confidence and comfort into American homes." This sounds well, but looks badly - especially to the 4,000 men at Homestead on the ontside of the "defensivo barriere," which stand stock still and protect the Carnegie Steel company f rom their American workmen, instead of walking abont and carrying "confidence and comfort into American homes."
