City, March 20.- Soon alter 5 o'clock Sunday morning James Slieridan, 26 years old, met instant death at the hands of Quartus Stevens, keeper of a resort known as the "Square Front," near the depot in this citj'. Stevens broke into the room occupied by Sheridan with a rifle in his hands and before his victim conkl arise from the bed ftred twQ shots. Itoth balls missed their mark and pierced the head board. Sheridan then jümped from bed and as he did so Stevens fired a third time, the ball entering Shewlan's left side just below the heart, burying itself in his spine. Without a word Sheridan feil to the floor on his face and instantly expired. The murderer tiropped his gun and, grabbin? his oveicout and hat, ran out of the front door and disappeared. The sheriff and a large posse were on his trail vvithin half an hour and it is not believed he can escape. Sheridan and James Davis, a farmer oy, weit to the. Stevens house aturday uight at 10 o'clock and emained all night, Davis sleepng on the couch downstairs, while heridan occupied a bed upstairs u a room adjoining that of tevens and his wife. A few minutes efore the shooting Stevens avvakened )avis and told him if Sheridan did not et out of his house in five minutes ie would kill hira. A minte later Davis heard .Stevens jreak in a door and an instant ater carne the shots. Then Stevens an out of the building. The details of he shooting are told by Mrs. Stevens, who is understood to have fceen ocourying the same bed with Sheridan. drs. Stevens claims she was in an adoining room when the shooting took )lace. She is in the custody of the ofifi nftrs.
