llie Lansing Republican tells the following on the state treasurer: A gentleman from Ann Arbor, who was here the other day, tells this good one on State Treasurer J. F. Hambitzer. He had occasion to visit the university city the other day, and registered at the Cook house as plain .). F. Ilambitzer, Hancock." The clerk at the hotel, who possibly does not know that Michigan ever has such an officer as state treasurer, looked his guest over, and when asked by the genial "Joe" if he had a room, said the house was pretty f uil, but he might bqueeze mm in on the top iloor. Being somewbat tired and anxious to get J away on an early morning train, he asked to be shown up,and was asked by the suspicious clerk if he had any baggage. "BaggageV No, I haven't," was Joe's reply; "just down on a flying visit, you know." "Wel!, you'll have to put up in advance, then. We don't keep strangers here unless they put up or make a showing of baggage of some kind." Mr. Hambitzer was about paralyzed by this time, but not a soul was in sight he knew, so he accepted the situation, put up bis stuff, and went to bed. When he carne down in the morning he politely handed the officious clerk his card, on which was printed "State treasurer and cashier of the Hancock flrst national bank," and walked out. In all probability the next time he goes to Ann Arbor he will get the bridal chamber and the best the house affords, and no questions asked.
