The appointment by the President of William E. Quinby, of the Detroit Free Press, as minister to the Hague, is welcome news to Michigan democrats. Mr. Quinby is well fitted for a diplomatic position. He is one of natures noblemen, a gentlemen, every inch of him, and is a worthy representative of a great nation. Ex-Lieutenant Governor John Strong, of Monroe, is being strongly endorsed for collecter of the customs at Detroit. Mr. Strong as lieutenant governor shovved himself to be both level headed and in possession of strong back bone. He is high in the favor of the democracy of the state. The Michigan legislature is doing a great deal of mischief by its hurried passage of laws without examination or debate. Many jobs are getting through and a mass of illegal laws are being placed on the statute books. The passage of an important tax law, crudely worded, with out consideration, is apiece of stupendous folly. It will not do to talk of lynchings in Texas as evidence of race feeling, when we have such outrageous lynchings in this state as that of Sullivan in Shiawassee county. The spectacle of a dead human body dragged about the streets by little boys is one that Michigan should not be proud of. Crime should be punished, but by the state and not by private individuals. Nothing so demoralizing to a community has occurred in Michigan for a long time.
