Hon. Charles S. Gregory died at i his home in Dexter village, Sunday afternoon, of appoplexy. He was born on a farm in Cayuga county, New York, August 15, 1816, his parents being nativesof Connecticut of Scotch descent. He was educated at a district school, and spent one term in an academy. He settled with his father in Scio township in September, 1S34, and was married to Miss Margaret Vannest before he was twenty-one. The first three years of their married life was spent on a rented farm, which he worked on shares, going in debt for a team of horses. At the end of three years he was able to buy a quarter section of wild land in Howell. He was one of the oldest settlers living in the county, and had been a subscriber to this paper for fifty years or more. For twenty years he was a member of the Dexter school board, and always took a great inserest in educational matters, and was chairman of the building committee which erected the new school house. He was an earnest and consistent democrat, who enjoyed the confidence of his party. He was president of Dexter village for five years, and was supervisor of Scio for four terms. He was a member of the Michigan legislature in 1861-2, and again in 1883, in the latter year defeating Judge Kinne. He was the senior member of the banking firm of C. S. Gregory & Son. By close attention to business, he had amassed a good-sized fortune and was undoubtedly the richest man in Dexter. He is survived bywife, one son, and three daughters, Hon. J. V. N. Gregory, Mrs. John Pacey, Mrs. George Phelps, and Mrs. Tip. Phelps, all of whom reside in the county. Mr. Gregory was an honored cïtizen of the countY, his words were always listened tö with respect, and his counsel sought. He was a member of the Episcopal church, a kind husband, a good father and an excellent citizen. The masonic lodge of which he was a member, adopted the following resolutions: The following resolutions in memory of Hon. C. S. Gregory were unanimously adopted by Washtenaw Lodge No. 65, F. A. M., of Dexter, through her undersigned committee: Whereas, It has pleased the Supreme Master of the Universe to remove from our midst our brother, the Hon. Chas. S. Gregory, thus removing from us a faithful friend of this lodge, and from the village of Dexter a respected citizen, therefore Resolved, That this Lodge hereby extend to the bereaved widow and family their sincere sympathy and condolence in this their affliction, and that we commend them to the protecting care of Almighty God. Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the records of this lodge, a copy of them be sent tothe family and also published in the village and county papers. Resolved, That the lodge be draped in mourning for a suitable period in memory of the deceased.
