The second ward school yard is being fixed up. The office floor of the Cook House is being replaced by new tiles. A special election foralderman to fill vacancy will-be held in the third ward, July 31. Dunning, of New York, lit '56, the largest owner of the Rail Rroad Gazette, at Chicago, was a guest of his relative, Mrs. Seleck Wood, last week. The time of the morning services in St. Thomas' Hall will be changed next Sunday. There will be low mass at 7 :3o o'clock a. m. , and high mass at 10 o'clock a. m. Yesterday afternoon the fire department responded to an alarm from Mrs. Neble, 22 Kidgsley street and succeeded in extinguishing a fair sized blaze. Damage about $30. John Costello has been appointed postmaster at Dexter. Mr. Costello is a working democrat, whose appointment will prove pleasing to many who believe in recognizing the workers. Justice Bennett had his first case, Wednesday, and presented Edson Wetherbee with five days in jail for being drunk on Main street Monday night. He was arrested by Marshal Murray. Paul Schoeffler, a twelve-year-old lad, has been placed under arrest for attempted rape upon a little seven-year-old girl. The complaint was made in April. He confesses the attempt. He appears before Justice Pond today for examination. Officer Tice arrested Edward Wosser, Monday night, for being drunk, He had been fighting, and claimed that some Ypsilanti boys had been trying to do him up. He was taken before Justice Bennett, and paid a fine and costs amounting to $5.80. Subscribers to the Argus who have not paid their subscriptions in advance, are requested to send their subscriptions in now. We have a large amount out on subscriptions in small amounts and the money would be of especial valué to us just now. The street railway has asked for a franchise to build a loop line from Polhemus' stables north on Main street and on Depot street to Detroit street, so as to avoid the wait on Main street. They also ask for the right to lay a doublé track on North University avenue. The Washington correspondent of the Detroit Free Press says: "Congressman Gorman is now very comfortably located on the committee on military affairs, of which he has been a very active member, and he may also receive the chairmanship of one of the committees on expenditures in the executive departments." Six men were arrested by Sheriff Brenner and his officers at the Michigan Central depot, Saturday, while stealing a ride from Jackson, and sent back to Jackson to be tried for breaking the seal of a car. They claimed to be from Detroit, and did not look like the ordinary tramps. They had been visiting the World's Fair, and were beating their way back to Detroit. The Ann Arbor Turn Verein elected the following officers, Monday evening: President, William Herz; vice-president, Charles G. Dietas; turn warts, Charles Rettich, Henry Weitbrecht ; ree. sec, Christian Gauss; cor. sec, Albert W. Sorg; treasurer, William Arnold; cashier, Christian Braun , quartermaster, Fred Gauss; trustees, Christian Fink and George Gruner; color bearer, John Fischer ; stèward, Conrad Schneider. A quiet wedding occurred at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Gage on Mary street, at high noon, July 4, when their eldest daughter, Blanche A., was united in marriage to Mr. John R. Bowdish. Dinner followed the many congratulations, after which the happy couple departed on a short wedding trip. Mr. and Mrs. Bowdish will spend the summer at Hackley Park, returning in September, when they will occupy their future residence in the Hall addition, recently purchased by .Mr. Bowdish. __
