Justice Bennett officiated at his first marriage ceremony last Friday. The contracting parties were William Bird and Miss Mary O'Conner, of Augusta. The justice put on his most solemn countenance, looked up the marriage ceremony, which he had been carefully rehearsing since his election last spring, and proceeded to do the job with neatness and dispatch. "How much?" asked the groom. "Two dollars," said the justice. "Two dollars!" exclaimed the surprised groom; "why, I haven't got that much money; I have got it at home." Finally, after turning out his pockets he scraped together 93 cents, which he deposited with the justice, the remainder being charged up on the ledger. The first ceremony was a success, and the justice will make a successful and popular marriage solemnizer.
