The President and Members of the Board of Public Works: QcnUe.mrn.- ïherewith submit to you my report on the testlng of the sewer pipe deilvered iit the Mecliauical Laboratory of the Universlty of Michigan, July 1G, '93. Samples of the pipe broken are exhibited. DESCRIPTION OK TESTS. The tests were made at the Mechanical Laboratory wlth the Olsen testing machine. The specimens were mounted on the table of the machine. The pipe rested on twó "2-inch" pine beairugs'il inches between centers and the load slowly applied midway between supports. The load was obtalned by means of a jack-serew braced against the eeiling and was measured on the scale-beara of the machine. Care was taken to make the conditions as nearly as possible uniform for all tiles. Tile No. 3 had a 6-inch Y in one side. When this piece was tested the axis of Y made an angle of about -in degrees with the plane of the floor. The followlug data was taken: Leugth.- From spigot to shoulder, u'nside.) Iiam.- Mean of 4 diam. Thickuess.- 1. Mean of i at the spigot, (inside.) 1 inch from end. 2. Thickncss of brokcu pipes.- This wlll bc found marked in specimens submitted. Weight.- Total weight of each tier with exception of Nos. 1 and 4. t'olor of fracture. Depth of glazing.- When apparent. Load at cracking. Load at complete failure. Marmer of failure. These wlll be fotmd embodied in the following table : Appended are some resulta of tests at Kose Polytechnlc School, an account of which experiments is to be found in the Jojurnal of Transactions of the Assoclation of Engineering Societles, vol. X, June 1881. The book is in University llbrary. The letters rel'er to makers and resulte here quoted are for conoentrated load- similar to the tests maile for yon, except that distance between centers was 16 inrfies in the quoted case. The uniform load test made by means of embedding in sand. KF.SUI.TS OF TESTS AT ROSE POT.Y. SCHOOI.. CONCF.NTRATED 1.F.AD.
