Deputy Sheriff Smith went to Whittaker, Weduesday, to arrest Geoige Bryant oa a charge of assault and battery. The offence, however, whs an extraordinary one. It seeius that .bryant is very much inclined to demónstrate his superiority of muscular power over those whom he thinks he can conquer, and has been in trouble bef ore. This time his wife was the victim of his prowess. The two had a quarrel over some trilling matter, and Bryant grabbed her roughly and held her to a burning.hot stove, in cousequence of which she has been laid up for a week, until she could get to this city and swear out a warrant. Her chestisin a frightful condition, and she certainly must have suffered excruciating pain. When Mr. Smith rived, Bryant immediately used his legs to advaatage, and having a good lead on the officer, secreted himself in a swanip. Mr. Smith tracked him for two hours, but finally was obliged to give it up, but has left a man in the vicinity with full powers to secure Bryant if he shows up. This he will undoubtedly do, as he has about 20 acres of land 'and some stock to take care of. It is to be hoped that he will not escape the justlce the people
