Capt. Clinton Spencer, of Ypsilanti, for the past year chief clerk of the state department at Lansing, died Wednesday morning in Lansing of apoplexy. He lay in a comatose condition from Monday night when he was stricken down. Capt. Spencer was 53 years of age and was born in Ypsilanti. He served in the late war until 1863, when he lost a leg at the battle of Gettysburg. He was a captain in the First Michigan Infantry. He was elected register of deeds of this county in 1867 and was postmaster at Ypsilanti from 1871 to 1883. His wife is at present state librarían.
