Repairing A Crown
What curions old records one comes across sometimes in unexpected ways! Here is one which rather calis to mind certain fairy tales beginning "Once npon a time" and going on to recount extraordinary proceedings quite as i f they were the most natural and common things in the world. It has reference to Edward III and Bhilippa of Hainault and ia kept with other documenta at Harwich, tlieir majesties baving had at the time a palace at Felixstowe. It runs thus: "For repairing ye queen"s crown which ye king threw into ye fire. j item 3s. 6d. " The points which strike i one in this memorandum are the vio lence of the king's temper and the cheapness of the mending process. -
