At The Women's League
At the last meeting of the Women's club on Saturday, December 16, Mrs.Gayley-Browne gave a very interesting and instructive paper on the "Condition of the Women of the Lower Classes in Ireland." Mrs. Gayley-Browne lived for more than twenty-four years in the extreme western part of Ireland, and, as her husband was a pastor, had every opportunity of knowing the Irish peasant thoroughly. She laid great stress upon the exquisite beauty of the land and the contrasting disfigurement of the wretched hovels and forlorn condition of the inhabitants. She described the educational system and the social and moral life of the people. The lecture was enlivened by many humorous stories. Mrs. James B. AngelĂ spoke in behalf of the lower missions, urging the members of the League to interest themselves in its beautiful work.
