Was In a Hen House.
The Body of Mrs. Peter Paccoloni of Dafter.
The Husband Believed to Be the Perpetrator of the Monstrous Crime--There Is Great Excitement at Dafter and Other Parts of the County on Account of the Terrible Deed.
Sault Ste. Marie, Dec. 28.--The body of Mrs. Peter Paccoloni of Daffer, this county, who has been missing for nearly three weeks, was found Wednesday by Thomas Fagan and John McGahey. The body had been buried in a henhouse. The men unearthed the remains sufficiently to recognize them.
Peter Paccoloni, the husband, who is in jail here on suspicion of the murder of his wife, is believed to be the perpetrator of the crime. There is great excitement at Dafter and other parts of the county over the affair. If Paccoloni was not in jail, Judge Lynch would probably take summary action. Paccoloni's examination will take place tomorrow In statements made soon after his arrest Paccoloni denied all knowledge of the whereabouts of his wife.
Suspicion against Paccolonia was first aroused when blood was found on the bed of his house, on the bedroom door and in the cellar by neighbors and the two sons of the deceased woman, who searched the premises. Suspicion was further increased by Paccoloni's answer to the question as to what Mrs. Paccoloni wore the day she was last seen. Paccolonie at that time stated that she must have gone before without telling him where she was going. The garments he said she wore were found during the search.
The Italian told his questioners that he had made a thorough search of the premises, but could not find her. He especially emphasized the remark that she could not be in the henhouse, as he had looked there more carefully than elsewhere. On being told be his stepson that there was blood in the henhouse, he replied: "Oh, that is blood from chickens which have been killed there."
Altogether his actions were so suspicious as to warrant his arrest, which was made last week. The offer of a reward of $50 for the recovery of the body, dead or alive, spurred on the search, with the result that the body was found as stated.
