Grand Rapids, Jan. 23. - A brutal murder was committed in tliis city Wednesday morning, and Mrs. Mary McKendrick, aged 65, was the victim. Abont 9 o'clock a grocer's boy canie with a basket of provisions she ha.d ordered the previous day and f ound Mrs. McKendrick dead upon the floor. Her ankles and wrists were tied with pieces of rope and her face was tied tightly in a tablecloth. When this was taken off it was f ound that a towel had been forced into her ïnonth, and this, together with the tablecloth, strangled her. There were no blows struck, and it is evident that the old lady was surprised and seized froin behind. Marks upon her face and liinbs showed that she made a desperate struggle. It is 8upposed the inotive of the crime was robbery, as the old lady was known to have several hundred dollars abont the house. Holland, Mich., Jan. 34. - A detective from Grand Rapids succeeded in arresting one of the murderers of Mrs. McKendrick, killed and robbed in Grand Rapids a few days ago. He was caught at the Allen farm, eight miles sonth of here. He acknowledged his puilt, and said that he left his partner ear Grandville, and that they obtained $1,700. He was taken to Grand Rapids.
