Emil Frey, president of the Swiss repnblic, was a soldier in au IllinĂ¼i1: regiment during the war of the rebellion. At the beginning of hostilities he was employed near Chicago as a farmhand, and on Jnly 8, 1861, he enlisted as a sergeant with Company E of tho Twenty-fourth Illinois infautry. Fora time he was held as a hostage by the Confederacy and confined in Libby prison. He left the anny a major with a record for distingnished service, but
