The Female Ailantus
Mr. C. F. Saunders of Pbiladelphia justly calis attention to thegreat beauty of this tree. The male ailantus firot disgusta by its dieagreeable odor, and theo the flowers fall, leaving nothing more behind tbem. But the fernale flowers have a rather pleasant iragranco and are followed by the fruit, which soon takes on a beautifu! golden color. Most wili agroe with him that there are few things more beautiful than the fernale ailantus with its young fruit áuring the months of August and September. By the way, the name is ailantus and not ailanthus, as frequently writ. ten, the tree being named from the nese "allanto. "-
