Since the musty records of the Secretary of State's office have been taken down and the dust removed, would it not be well to go back a little and see whether the canvass on the constitutional amendment of April, 1889, whereby the governor's salary was increased from one thousand dollars to four thousand, was really ordered by the people or brought about by the gymnastic methods of counting in vogue with the state board of canvassers ' . W ill his excèllencey give this suggestion kindly consideration? Probably the Supreme Court, knowing the counting ability of the present board of state canvassers, would consent to have them recanvass that vote also Should it be found that this amend ment was also carried in the same marnier that more recent ones have been carried, there would be a snug little sum due the treasury from governors past and present that would make a good beginning in the way of filling up the emptyness caused by the last g. o. p. legislature.
