He was engaged to the girl, but he would not carry out the contract, though he refused to.give her up. She had coaxed hiin at first to give up his foolish notion, but he wouldn't have it, and finally she kicked out of the traces. 'Why don't you stop fooling," she said, "and marry me?" "My dear," he pleaded, "marriage in my case would be suicide." "Suicide? What do you mean?" "I mean that I am so poor I could not hire a cook." "Well," she urged bravely, "what of that? I am strong and well and can do the cooking until you are rich enough to hire a cook." "I know that, my dear love," he murmurad, taking her face in his hands, "it is yourcooking that I am afraidof."
