Alleged Murderer Discharged

Bay City. March 8. - William Sweeney was placed on trial in the circuit court Tnesday eharged with fatally Btabhing John Markel last September. Wednesday morning the prosecutiug Ettorney snbmitted the testimony of tbree witnesses and while otbers were waïting to be heard Jndg Maxwell annonnced bis belief that the people bad TLOt inade a case sufficiently strong to convict and ordered the nury to return n verdict of not guilty, which was done without leaving their seats. and the prisoner was discbarged. The action of the jndge caused great surprise and tbe prosecution protested, but in vain.
