African Disappointments

As a continent Atrica is the hoime oí a vigorons race of mankind, whieb, while resisting assiinilation with European civilization, defies permanent conquest. European travelers, traders, rnissionaries, conqnerors, may at their will and at their peni penétrate into this dark sanctnary, bnt their sojourn is for a day, and on the inorrow the faiat traces of their passage are obliteratctl by the exuberant, growths of barbarism. Grudgingly as it is sometimes conceded, it is nevertheless a fact that the bulk ai the continent of África is still untouched by western civilización. I for one cannot believe that África will ever be Europeanized or biought within the pale of western progresa, for, in order that África may progress it is absolutely essential that it be developed aloug natural lines, but as yet the inherent powers of native genius have neithtr been discovered, nor in the absence of any cohesión aniong native tribes and in view of European rapacity are they, even if discovered, ever likely to bo encouraged or fostered. No; África is a continent fated to be conquered and exploited by the heirs of civilization, to whorn it mav pav tribute, but honiage never.
