The days of gunpowder as a charge for naval guns ave numbered, as sotue experimenta just concluded at the government proof butts, Woolwich, appear to prove a decided superiority for cordite. A 6 inch quick firing gun w&s loaded with 29 pounds 12 ounces of the ordinary black gunpowder and yielded a velocity of 1,890 f eet per second, with a pressure strain on the gun of 15 tons per square inch. The same gun was charged with 14 pounds 3 ounces of cordite and gave a velocity of 2,274 feet per second and a pressure oí 15.2 tons. More important still, after 200 rounda had been fired, there were no signs of sion.
