Union City law and order citizens are about to open a campaign for the rigid enforcement of the laws, especially the local option law. Two of the four saloons at Utica have been obliged to go out of business on account of their inability to pay the present high license. The bulk of the Bates property at Saginaw, wMch v.is willed to the home of the friendless; has been purchased by Seemann & Peters for 35.000. The residence and barn of Lewis H. Bell of Saginaw was eompletely destroyed by lire. The loss is ?2,UO0, with nearly that amouut of insurance. Irving Buchanan of Saginaw dropped dead while sitting on the steps in the rear of his residence. Heart disease is believed to have been the cause. Coldwater merchants have paid a night watch for the past year and during that tiuie three burglaries have occurred, and the amount takeu in these was only about $5. Flint citizens are beconiing alarmed at the spread of smallpox ia the city, and have petitioned the council to purchase a pesthouse in case of an emergency. Mather & Son"s store at East Leroy was broken into an plundered of a quantity of general merchandise. Tramps are supposed to have been the thieves. F. W. Elliott and A. C. Bath of Hillsdale have been offered a bonus to go to Evart, Osceola county, and establish and opérate a mili at that place. Tüey will accept the offer. John Harper of Coldwater was convicted of cruelty to animáis and fined $33.83, or 65 days in the Detroit house of correction. This is Harp r s third offense.
