OOMMUNICATION FRO1I THE MAYOR. un Arbor, Mich., June i, 1894. 'o the Honorable the Common Council. A eommunication from the Health Offlcer s here gubmitted to you for consideration; believe that the salaries of the active memers of the Board of Health are not what hey should be, if we demand the valuable ervice which that Board shonld perform. I'his should be the mo6t imijortant Board in our city government, and this work should )e carelully perl'ormed. I would, therefore, equest that the matter of salaries of the Soard of Health be Investigated and that the ïoard be i'equired to make monthty reports o the Common Council the same as other loards, aud that these reports become a permanent record bybeing publiahed iuyour oioceediago. C. G. DARLIN'G, Mayor. Ann Arbor, June 4th '34. To his Ho or the Mayor, C. G. Darliug: Dear Sir- I believe that the conpensation of the Board of Health is not what it should e for the performance of labor necessarily mposed by a city of the magnitude of Aun Arbor. The time will soon arrive when lateral sewers will be extended to mauy parts of he city. And many privy vaults will require :o be inspected aud ordered to be emptiea and he vaults h'lled. This alone will require much time. Also an increado of lalior would neeessitate moptbly reports, irom various juarters which is almost unknown for the very reason that the compensation is too mail. In my report for the year last past I mentioned wliat would be a fair salary for a health offlcer. The duties imposed on the inspector of the Joard of Health should be at least one hundred and flfty dollars. While the president of he Board should have at least one hundred loilars, ihis position ia something like the oue 7our Honor occuples, therefore, hls salary should be less). With a fair salary, mouthly reports would be exacied from everj" physician aud undertaker in the city. Very courteously, DR. JOHN KAPP. Referred to special committee on salaries Board of Health, which was appointed May 21, 1894. A petition signed by Beal Barkham and twenty-rive others, asking the Mayor to appoint patrolman on De;roit street and Broadway as passed by the common council. Referred to Committee on Pólice.
