StXNDISH, Jnne 12- By the nerve of the nightwtitch of the Standish House, a disastrous couflagration was averted. j The proprietor of the house had [ chased from outside parties a barrel of j what purported to be Headlight oil, I but which eventually proved to be ', gasoüne, with whicb the barrel had . been filled by mistake. About night the nightwatch discovered that Í one of the large lainps in the room upstairs was empty, and ed to fi!l it frorn a can which was filled froin the af'oresaid barrel. Upon lightina; the lamp an explosión folio wed. With great presence of mind and a considerable risk to himseif, he seized the lamp and took it to the balcony and threw it into the street below. Had the fire been less vigorously disposed of ; the nucleus of a great couflagration l would liave been the result, as the tire square is filled with large wooden buildings, and a fire in it would have i been hard to control, even with the 'aeulties now in hand.
