Kalamazoo, June 12.- J. E. Atwood, an insane man confined in jail lere for soine time, escaped froin an offieer while out walking, and after a ïvely chase, fraught with raany I ng and peculiar circumstances, was captured at Schoolcraft. Atwood ran to the Kalainazoo river and swain I across the streaui. He went then to a 'armhouse and stole an ax. A short distance further he took a horse standing in the road and niounted it, but the animal ran away, throwing Atwood to the ground. He was not injured, however, and with the ax in his hand proceeded to the Lake Shore tracks south of the city, where I19 Elagged a passenger train and boarded it. On nearing Schoolcraft he began smashing the windowa in the coach and threateniug to kill anyone who interfered with him. At Schoolcraft an offieer was called and a melee between him and the crazy man ensued. Atwood threatened to split open the officer's head, but when the latter eovered him with a revolver he changed his mind. On the way to the lockup Atwood attempted to wrench the revolver from the officer's hand. The weapon exploded, the bullet passing through Acwood's hand. He will be brought back here and taken to the asylum. He is a traveliug man. His home is in Des Moines.
