David M. Griffith, a miner, had a j narrow escape frorn being crushed to death while at work in the Franklin mine, but the accident fortunately resulted in nothing more serious than a broken leg and a terrible fright. Griffith was at work on a slope wheu ' pieces of coal weighing about 1,500 pounds becanie detached above hini and started down the slope toward Grifflth, whose only escape lay in running down the slope ahead of tho lunip of coaL It soon became a race for Ufe, with the coal inereasing its speed at every bound and adding to the terrors of the flying I Griffith. Half way down the slope the j speed at which Griffith was going i tinguished the lamp in his hat and left him in the dark. He contiuued his flight, in which lay his only safety, and after running for what seeined an age he stumbled on one of the side beams and feil, expecting to be instantly crashed to death. The coal carne on, and by a miracle was checked by the timber, but in jamming caught one of poor Grifflth 's legs against the timber, breaking the bone in two places. Help soon carne down to the man, and he was carried out and cared for. Griffith savs it was the narrowest escape
