They Must Prove It
On invitation of the Marshal, Martin Vogel, yesterday, dropped into Justice Pond's office, to inform the squire that the charge against him of keeping his saloon open last Sunday was not true. Mr. Vogel stated that, owing to a disabled wrist he was unable to cleanse the cuspidors in his place, and Sunday being hot the old soldiers and other debris rendered the combined atmosphere too salubrious for the health of himself and family who reside upstairs. He therefore asked his bartender to dispose of the nosegay and cologne the cuspidors, and this was the work he was engaged in when the marshal saw him. He denies selling liquor and gave bonds to answer in the circuit court.
