One of the f a vori te arguinents of the skeptic is that the Biblical story of Jonah and thewhale cannot be true simply because the books on natural history say that such animáis have very sniall throats. Appleton's American Cyclopediasays, "The foodof whales consista only of the smallest of the marine inollusca, a herring being the largest fish they can swallow. ' ' Chambers' Encyclopedia, in the article "Whale, " says: "The gullet of whales is very narrow. It is said not to be more than 1 y2 inches in dianieter even in a large whale, bo that only very small animáis can pass through it. " In McMillan's book on the curiosities of the oceau, "The Sea and lts Denizens, " chapter 3, page 69, I find the following: "That the story of Jonah and the whale cannot be refuted simply because such animáis have, as a rule, very small gullets or throats may be inferred from the fact that there are certain species of the sperm whale now living that can swallow an object 2 feet in diameter.
