Iromediately following the republican county convention came the representative convention for the First district. A. J. Sawyer was made chairman, and Fred C. Brown secretary. The customary proceedure was taken, and the convention soon got down to the real pepper-sauce of the business - the nomination of a sacrifice for democratie mutton cutlets. Mr. Childs, of Ann Arbor, nominated Emery E. Leiand, of Northfield. Mr. Newkirk, of Dexter, presented the name of Reuben H. Kempf, of Ann Arbor. Result of ballot : Leiand _ 4 Kempf 54 That settled it, and on Mr. Leand's motion, the nomination of VIr. Kempf wjs unanified.
