onder the direction of the boundary survey cominission the old marble monument which ssince 1849 has markedthe dividing line between the United States and Mexico at the coast has been brought to the city to be dressed up. For years that monument has been a point of interest and has been visited by thousands of citizens and strangers. Each has apparently feit that uo one wonld believe he or she had been there if some portion of the slab were not carried away to be offered in evidenco on all occasions. The result has been that the marble has been chipped and defaced until its original form is almost lost. It is because of all tuis that the slab was brought to the city. To work out the effaoements the surface would have to be worked down two inches. When redressed, the stone will again be placed in positiou, but this time it will be picotéete, by a fence of steel pickets. The inclosurè will be 12 f eet square. The pickets will be 8 feet high, the 'tops sharply pointed aud leauing inward, after the device of some rattraps, so that while it might be possible for au active person to climb in it would require a first class acrobat to climb out over those curving pickets. Besides this a new taw makes it a peual offense to mutílate the monuments. At Tia Juana a similar slab will be erected on the old brick foundation in National avenue, which has long been a landmark there. The Tia Jnana monument will be of granite instead of marble, and it will be inclosed witb steel Dickets, like the oue at the coast line
