Fbostbukg, Md., Oot. 1.- Cardinal Gibbons in a sermón on the labor question said in part.: "Before the coming of Chri3t ;:ianuul labor was held in degradation and relegated to slaves as being unworthy of frcexnen. Christ our Savior has dignifled and entiobled labor by word aud example. H: was pleased to devoto r.iany years of his iifo to inechamcal pursuits and over since he worked in the earpenter shop he shed a halo tirotmd the workshop. Labor has its rights, chiof among vrhioh is the privileges of organizatioa without Infringlng upon the employee One of the most difflcult questions in our times to discusa is the questLon of strikes. Strikes, as experience has domonstrated, are very questionable for the redress of the Liborer's grievanoes. Statistics furnishixl show that the loss to tho employés by strikes for eight yoarsamountedto nearly $78,000,000, the employers only lost one-half this amoimt. I earnestly hope that some efficiënt remedy will be found to put an end to our reourring strikes, aud arbitratioa seems to lie the most potout mothod that can be concoived."
