Dirt ligging is in progress in the Washington street sewer, the inaugural exercises having been begun Wednesday. A little ruction was raised over the report that Mr. Hutzel proposed to ignore the agreejnent to engage Ann Arbor labor at L1.50 per day. His proposal was to give 15 cents an hour to competent labor, the laborer to furnish his own piek and shovel, on the plan in practice in the city. When it was understood by the men that they were required to arm themselves at their own cost, some of them declined to work, and of the number mobolized only about half a dozen pulled off their coats to the business. After conference with the board of public works, Mr. Hutzel advertised by bilis for labor at 15 cents an hour, and a large forcé went into the trenches, the men furnishing their own implements. It is believed the work will proceed without further friction.
