A fine specimen of manly developrnent, set off by a handsome face, expressive black eyes and a killing "goatee" to which ensemble of natural gifts were added the rather stunning though elegant costume of a Muscovite on dress parade, pleted tic appointments of Mr. Yovcheff, who lectured Monday evening at the Church of Christ. His lecture treated of the "Jews of Russia" and the certifícate of charaoter he gave them would hardly secure them places in the best society. lt is to be feared that the brilliant Vovcheff's antipathy is touchec with aialice. He describes them as a vulgar, unkenipt squalid people, who in spite of the government's efforts to make thrifty farmers of them by allotments of land, had steadüy resisted all attempts to make of them an agricultural people. They preferred trading anc living by their own shifts, in dirt and ignorance. In just what particular respect the Russian Jews of the poor classes were worse than the peasantry ol other nations Mr. Yovcheff did not state. The lecturer paid a glowing tribute to the American nation and contrasted its freedom from the shackles of bigotry, with the unfortunate partisanship between ignorance, the priests and the pólice of Russia.
