ST. LiOUIS, Ma, Dea 19.- A special to i'he Kepublic fioni Cripplo Creek, Colo., aya: Richard Newell, Jr., chief engineer of the Midland Terminus railroad, buildng from Divide íítation ou the Colorado rfidland road into thls camp, was shot and instantly killed late yesterday by an enraged niiner named Van Houten near the Independence mine. The right of way of the line had crossed the miner's claim and an ad justinent had been arrangeil which appeared satisfactory to ïim, but afterwards he made new denands. It appears that Newell was down on the ine, which was being pushed across the Van Houten claim, when the niiner assaulted Newell with murderons intent. ïhe eamp is aflame with excitement over what seeins to have been a cold-blooded iffair and there will probably be a lynchng. Newell formerly resided in Cleveand, O., and is a nephew of the late John Newell, president of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railway. Young Newell returned about two weeks ago from the funeral of his wife who was buried in Cleveland.
