Washington, .Jan. ;!.- Tho census office has madft public a report showing that the owncrs of farms and homes, regardcd as Bubstantlally tho land owncrs of the United States, own raore than WO per cent. of the wealth of the country. Of the white owners and tenant heads more than 61 per cent. are owners; of the negroes more than 17 per cent. ; of mixed white and negro parentage .'5 per cent. ; of the Indians 65, and of tho Chinese and Japanese 14 The white owners of farms and homes that are free of inortgago forni 71 per cent of all white owners, of tho negroes 89, of tliose of mixed parentage 87, of the Indians 9t, and of the Chinese and Japanese 97 per cent. ïho percentages of ownership are slightly higher for womeu than for men, and free ownership is also higher among women, excopt with the Indians and Chinese and Japanese. Percentages of Ownership. The results for farm properties show that 7ü per cent. of the whites are owners, il of the negroes, 20 of those of mixed blood, 7 of the Indians, and over 10 per cent. of tho Chinese and Japanese, whilo for homes, 39 per cent. of the whites are owners, more than 15 of the negroes, V3 of those of mixed blood, 53 of the Indians, and 14 of the Chinese and Japanese. In the fifty-eight citios of 50,000 populatlon and over almost 25 per cent. of the white proprietors are owners and not quite 9 per cent. of the nearroes. CoiupariBO as to Nut vil y. For farms and homes, 53 per cent. of the nativo proprietors are owners; from Austria-Hungary, 41 percent.; from Canada and Newfonndland (English), 47; froni Canada and Newfoundland (French) Bi; Wales and England, 46; France, 47; Germano, 5a; Ii-eland, 44; ltaly, 15; Norway, Swedtm and Denmark, 61 j Rósala and Poland, SI ; Scotland, 45, and from all other coun tries over 47 per cent. The native farm proprietors are exeeeded in ownernership by the natives of all of these countries oxcept ltaly, whose percentage for native owners is 69 and for the Italians 158, and the highest percontage is 87 for the Irish. Ownurship Is more prevalent among native thnn among foreign born proprietors in the case of homes than it is among farm proprietors. lloini". iu the Great G'tties. The ownership of homes in the flftyeight prlncipol clties is nearly as great among the foreign born as among the natives. Among the native home proprietors in these cities 23 per cent. are owners. the highest percentage being H2 for the Germans, and the lowest ö for the Italians. The results of the inquiry as to the nativity of the parents of the white native farm and home proprietors sh ows that for farms and homes 55 per cent. of the proprietors who have both parents native born are owners and 4iJ per cent of those who have one or both parents foreign born. Ownership at Difl'erent Ages. The percentages for farm owners having both parents native born is 69 and in the case of homes 4á per cent. The total for both eexes and for farms and hornea shows that of the proprietor3 under ü5 years of age, 'M per cent, are owners; f rom 35 to 29 years, 38 per cent. ; f rom 30 to 34 years 37 percent.; f rom :i5 to 3!) yenrs 4á per cent.; 40 to 44 yuars 411 per cent. ; 45 to 49 years 53 per cent. ; 50 to 54 years 57 per cent. ; 55 to 59 years (3 per cent. ; and 60 years and over 69 per cent. Percentages are generaily somewhat higer for women than for men. Farm ownership is more prevalent at aü ages than home ownership. Ownership is more prevalent arnong women wlio are farm and home owners and heads of tenant families than among men. The women cxceed the men also in the n'fty-eight principal cities. One reason for the difference between the figures for the two 86X68 ■ is the custom that inakes the husbaml instead of the wife the head of tlio family. The ownership of farms and homes is dlvided between the two sexes in the proporción of 83 per cent, to the males and j7 to the femóles.
