EDUCATIONÁL COLUMN. H-i Sí. -1. C'AVANAUOH, COMMISfilOSJEK. DEXTKH l'NION SCHOOLS. Dexter can well boast of a first-class and modern school building. It is construc;ed on the mosl approved plan for heat and ventilation. The schcol is ! under the supervisión of Prof. A. D. Dewit, a man who is thoroughly up with the times in eduealional niatters, courteous and pleasant to teachers and ! pupils, a good disciplinarían, and well equipped for school work. The High School has an enrollmeiit of 34, with Mr. M. .1. Keht as preceptor, a gradúate of the U. of M . 11 e is a hard worker. 11 is classes in Latin are learning to translate fluwitly. The üeesar class was heard in part by the Commissionpr, and proved iuteresting and instmctive. The general assistant. Miss phine Costello, holds a first grade tilicate and does fnst-class work in the i-lass room, both as teaclu-r and disciplinarían. Qrammar Room.- This ïwom is in charge of Mis. Belle Croaikin. The discipline is good, and the scholars are thoroughly instructed. Iiilnmediatc Boom.- The enrollmeiit is 34. Soine very creditable maps were presented. The room seemed to be characterized with a spirit of progress. Miss Maude Buchanan is teacher. Second Primary.- Miss Myrtie Bosf wiek has an enrollment of 30 in the room. She is earnest and enthusiastie in the work, and the scholars seern to enjoy their studies. Firxt Primary.- Miss Jessie Doaue has 28 little tots in this room. The chiidren are well supplied with the necessary apparatus. The room presents a cheerful and attractive appearance, the intention being to make the little ones feel as much at home as possible. The work in language and penmanship shows that the teacher is a close observer of child nature and acquainted with cnrrent literature on primary work. It is gratifying to note that the entire school is pervaded with a unity of purpose and a harmony of action, without which no school can obtaiH the best results. DISTBlCT NO, 1, WEUSTKH. This school is nicely located and well equipped with apparatus. The teacher is earnest and enthusiastie in the work. The school is provided with a good combination chart for class-rooiii work. Enrollment, 14. Miss Millicent McCall, teacher, Delhi Mills. DISTRICT NO. 2, WEBSTER. This school has an enrollment of 13. There are three scholars in the 8th grade and are well advanced in their work. The school is well disciplined and the scholars are attentive and studious. Miss Jennie Latson, Webster, is teacher. DISTRICT NO. 5, WEBSTER. This school is under the supervison of Láveme Cushing. Enrollment, 18. There are four in the 8th grade who expect to take the examinatiOD for a common school diploma at the end of the winter term. This is the second year the present teacher has supervised a school. In grammar the diagram is úsed as a helpf ui aid to analysis. DISTRICT NO. 7, WEBSTER. This is one of the best equipped schools in thb township for apparatus. The school board should be commended for the liberality in this direction. The apparatus in the hands oí a skillf ui and efficiënt teacher, is a valuable acquisition to any school. Special attention is given to language. Mr. Vernon Sawyer is teaching his third successive year in the district and has accomplished in this time much for the school room, a place where the scholars delight to come, and take pleasure in the school work. The enrollment is 20. Mr. W. O. Reade is director, Hamburg, Mich. DISTRICT NO. 3, DEXTER. The school is under the supervisión of M. Austin Goodwin. The school has an eurollraent of 40. A combination chart is made use of by the teacher. It is specially valuable in giving instruction in primary grades. The teacher is careful and pains takiug. There is a marked advancement in reading since the last visit of the commissioner. Frank Carpenter, director, Dexter, Micli. DISTRICT NO. 3, WEBSTER. This school has an enrollment of lö. There are some large scholars in the school. The class in advanced arithnietic was called and recited during the visit of the commissioner. The work was of a practical nature on measurements. Mr. C. S. Goodwin is teacher. He is progressive in school matters and is the holder of a first grade certiftcate. The school has been provided with a new desk and chair, and a good combination chart. Mr. William Parsons is director, Dexter, Mich. DISTRICT NO. 8, WEHSTElt. This school is nicely located. It has an eurollmeut of 19 and is uuder the supervisión of John F. Conley. His work last year in this school was 'of such a satisractory nature that he was the unanimous choice of the patrons for another year. The discipline is good and the pupils give strict attentiou to their work. M. Devine, Dexter, is director. DISTRICT NO. 1, SCIO, The teacher, Miss Agnes lïawkins, of Dexter, is teaching her second year in this district. There are two scholars in the 8th grade. The school is not provided witli a dictionary. The blackboard needs repairing very much. It is in very poor condition for school work. The old wooden desks are still used. Tiiis is the only school in the county novv usiug this kind of desk. Enrollment 12. Miss Hawkins has introduced supplementair reading which has proved very benelicial to the scholars. DELHI MILLS DISTRICT, SCIO. The school building is in excellent shape. The room is nicely decorated and made very attractive and homelike for the children. The school is provided with a good dictionary and in orzan, The enrollment is 16. Miss Clara Feiner has had charge of the school chiïtng the fa!l and winter terms Miss Mar? ( Polhemns. of Arm Arbor, tobk charge Monday. M. Gr. Aberle. of Delhi Mills is .rector. A literary society was organized in District N. 8 on the pvening of the ltith. The tollowing officers vveie elected: President, John Harris; vicepresident, Agnes Devine; seeretary, Miss Friiiikie Cushing. The society will give its fust entertainment one week f rom Saturday even ing. Gootl music will be a special feature. Om week frons Friday ovening, Jan. 2ó, at the Webster churcb school there will le a township spelling match. Ëacli school in the town will he represented by tUrée of its best spellers. A prize will be given to the successful school. In addition to the spel linjr contest there wiil be good speaking and music.
