l.iere is one bad resnlt ot constant cigarette smoking ttiuc very few pcople know anything ubout. ' süid a Brooklyu dentist. "The resnlt nsdf has bten apparent to ne and to all dentista for a long time, ï at thei cause has been a mystery until very reeen tly. For years the nerves of teeth in every other way perfect have been found dead A carefnl 3xamiuation of a dead nerve found in in nnesposed tooth recently revealed the fact that it had been poisoned by nicotine, and thereby tlie mystery referred to was solved. Nicotine poisoning trom cigarette smoking is killiug the uerves in the teeth of smokers. It is a most sorious stato of affairs, althongh most people will uot niidttrstaud. They thinlc a dead tooth is as gcod as a live one. Thoy will flnd their mistake some day. "A youilg woman whoni I have kiiown for somo time oame here the other day i and wantèd a tooth attended to. I worked on the tooth somo time, and some of the instrumenta I used should have mado her scream a littlo bit. But she nevcr mado a sound, and I imturally conclnded that the nerve of the tooth was dead. It surprised me because tho tooth was a good ono and the nervo unexposed. Well, I extracted the nerve, and the minute I saw it I knew what was the trouble. " 'Do you want a live nerve left in your head?' I asked. ' ' ' Why, of courso, ' she replied. " 'Theu stop smoking cigarettes, ' I said. " 'Why, doctor, what do yon mean?' she began. Then sho put on a great show of indignation. " 'My dear young lady.' 1 said, 'what's the use of talking so? I'm a dental surgeon and know a thing when I see it. You have been smoking cigarettes for a long time, and my advicu was giveu in a perf ectly friendly spirit. ' Well, she collapsed then, acknowledged the truth of what I had said, and that ended it. I don't think that cigarette emokors ligure this result of nicotine poisouing in with the many other injurious effects of the weed, but to my mind it is the most dangerous of all."
