In tho past soamanship was the chifcf thing. In tliu present seainanship, iii the old and sfrict sense of the world, holds a very snbsidiary place. When the winds and the waves and the tides could not be forced and had to be hurnored, the mystery of dealing with these eleiuonts was a worthy study for a whole life. But today we force the winds, the waves aud the tides, and humor them very little. The searaan is in process of beooming the engineer. Every year he booomes more and more tho engincer, and I am certain that a rauch briefer experience of the sea than was formorly noeded is now reqnired toward the formation of the good offlcer.
