A little kuown example of inventiva ?onius in woinan ís that afforded by Barbara Uttruan of Saxony and her 3oiut lace so loug in faahionable use all ovor tho worid. She invented tbe process aud apparatus for manufacturing fais beautiful handiwork, wbich has since given omployment to millions of operators, and which, in its line, has never been excelled. The apparatus looks liko a long pincushion bristling with jjíiis arranged to outline the pat;ern or design. The operator manages 'rom 10 to 00 peculiar spools, allowing tho thread to feed ovor tüe pins alternately ontil the design is completed. fhe spoola or bobbins are purposely of liffereut colors, so as to beeasily distinguisbuble. Theprocoss ís slow and difflcult to learn. Miss Uttman founded schools, wbero thousands learned it. Since her time, when inventivo ability was rare, even aiuong men, her ideas ïavo boen incorporated in the construc;ion of machinery by which the lace is woduced at wonderfnl lower rates, and 'ot Barbara Uttnian's lace still passes all. -
