FW Yohü, March 7.- The Military and Naval Order of the United States- a social organization whose members are lineal descendants in the male line of officers of one of the four wars of the republic, the War of the revolution, the war of 181:.', tho war wlth Tripoli and the Mexican War- held an initiatory meeting yesterday „fternoon at the Century reetauranr, formerly known as the Century Tavern, 12J Williams screuC The "Tavern" is tlio öldest house in New York, being ereoted lalfllfö. lc as formerly patronized by Washington, LaFayctte and other disöngulshed men of revoluttonáry times. It was the scène of the iirst engagement between the regulara of the British army nd the Sons of Liberty, whieh occurred in the vicinity of New York. It Filis a Louií-Felt Want. In the absence of Comraander Banks Vice Commander James H. Morgan preeided at the meeting. General Fitzjohn Porter, a veteran of the Mexican war, review'ed in a short address the causes eading up to and the results effected by that war. General Egbert L. Viele spoke of the organization and its purposes, and said that, while military societiv"; were Bomewhat numerous in the United States, tkis order encroached in 110 way upou the territory of any other. It perpetuated, he said, the names of the men whofought forthei'r country, since only desoeudants ntbe male line were cligibie tor membership, and it included four wars, where most of the other societies recognized only one war.
