The Rural New Yorker began its advocacy of level culture for potatoes and oorn about 18 years ago, and it has not since seen auy reason to changa There is no reason for hilling potatoes except to kill vveeds. Truo it is that potatoes in hills are inore easily harvested thau those in drills, but this is offset by the difference in yield. It is theu equivalent to planting deeper. Hilling the soil about the sterns directs the rain frorn where it is most needed to where it is least needed. U iá best to cultívate shallow nntil the rines prevent cultivation.
