A bout inidday on Sundáy, March ñ, 1S8:5, the passenger steamer James D. Parker attenipted to shoot the rapirts in the Indiana cbaunel of the Ohio at Louisville. The moment she entered the ohnte the lookout iu the station house of life saving crew No. 10 had a premouition that she was going to have troubJe and gave the alarm. Instantly the lifeboats Ready and Reckless were maxmed and started off iu the track of the steamer, the oarsmen pnlling witli a will and the boats outrunniug the curren t. The iinperiled steamer was a stern wheeler, and, the weigbt of her cargo being in front, on reaching tho incliné of the ohanuel her wheel and ruddera oonld not gec a grip on the current by viriel] she could be nianaged and steered. After a few moinents her bow disappeared under water; then she sareened to starboard, hor sinokestaoks toppled over, andacloud of steam arose from her like the vapor of an explosión. In bumpiag agaiust the rocks her stern was knockeil off, and .swinging out into the channel she sank in IH feet of water. Groups of terrified passengers, women and childreu amoug them, rushed from the cabins on deck. The roof had fallen, and boses and barrels tuin bied to tho decks below. The whole affair took place inside of ten. minutes, but the vessel had barely gone down after striking the last rock when the life savers, all steaming and reddened froin their life and death pull, were alongside with tho Ready and Reckless. A gaugplank was made by twisting off a cabin door, and upon that women and children, thefirstto besaved, werehelped iuto the boats. Some of the impatieiit passengers, doubtiug the prowess of tho life savers, juniped into the rapids and were swept down stream, but these were picked up after 1 2 loads had been taken frorn the wreek, and out of 1 05 souls on board not a lifo was lost.
