March is the auniversary date of the gallant struggle macto by Travis and his patriot band aloug the walls of the Alamo. On that day - 183(5 - America gave the world a uew Tberraopylsp and plaood the word Texau beside the word Spartan as a synouyrn for warlike valor. Ouly 1 88 men of arms could be rallied at that frontier outpost to hare their breasts against the host of Mexican spearmen swarruing over the border. It was a fight for liberty. Travis carried the bauner of the infant nation that had just raised the standard of revolt on the Rio Grande and which Santa Anna resolved to strangle in the eradle. After ten days' siege the dictator fornied nis column under the walls of the Alamo, with a line of cavalry behind it, to soonrge the storming parties forward with the saber should they f alter. Dsring the siege and asaanlt their busy rifles bad slain over üOO cnemies ar.n wonnded 1,000 more. The news of the tragedy called all Texas to arms, an.l lounding the battleory, "Kemomber tho AJamo!" the peoplo arose to av uge Travis and his niartyrs.
